Building a spot welder from a battery charger

http://blog.makezine.com

Josh at imsolidstate came across an extra battery charger, so he decided to turn it into a spot welder. We've seen spot welder projects in the past, however his goes the extra mile, adding a digital control circuit and current monitoring capabilities, to give precise control over the welding operation. Schematic and source code are available on his site.

Need a cool digital display? Fake it!

http://blog.makezine.com

Inspired by a heating pad they purchased, Windell and Lenore of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories show how to make a fake seven segment display. Using a carefully constructed plastic bezel, a potentiometer, and some regular LEDs, they were able to create a faux digital dial, with a way cooler color scheme than one would find on regular seven segment displays. Nice hack!

Instructables user gezortenplotz writes:

Wind across a microphone causes distortion and unwanted noise for videographers and nature recorders while taping outside. The purpose of the microphone 'blimp' is to attenuate the wind noise without interfering with the desired sound. Blimps are expensive. This project came in under $40. Double-whammy lighting/heating energy saving tank hack

http://blog.makezine.com

Flickr user fotogra4er replaced the fluorescent tubes lighting his aquarium with LEDs. Which, of course, make way more light and way less heat for the same amount of energy. Then he upped the ante by cooling the LED lighting bank with circulated tank water, exploiting what waste heat the LEDs do generate to warm it, and thus saving even more power that would otherwise go to the tank heater.
